Week of November 1

We should have a lot less hectic week next week than we did this week.  Propst will be working on West A Street between Chestnut Avenue and Oak Avenue on Monday and then paving along West Avenue and West A Street the rest of the week.

We will be paving the intersections of West A Street and West B Street on Wednesday, which will require those intersections to be closed.  We will close one intersection at a time and complete the needed work prior to proceeding to the next intersection.

Striping will be taking place along Main Street, Oak Avenue and Vance Street throughout the week, so be careful while they are working in traffic.

Schedule Change

A slight change to the schedule for this week. The intersection of West A Street and and West Avenue will be closed today.

We have been looking at the intersection and have decided that the best way to fix the intersection is to rebuild the intersection.   We are going to excavate the area inside the crosswalks to a depth of 12” and bring it back up in layers.  This is going to be inconvenient and somewhat time consuming, but I think it will be last longer and be a better finished product when we are complete.

The plan is to get the intersection to within about 2” of finished grade today, and then complete the paving either Friday or Monday.  We will make the transition into the intersection as smooth as possible, but it will have a bump between the different elevations.

Paving!

The time is here, asphalt! This week we are going to start the finishing touches on the project.  In order to get the roads back into good shape, we are going to mill the existing asphalt prior to paving.  Milling takes out a 1 ½” of the existing pavement, which means we will have some bigger bumps in the roads.  We expect the milling to take two days and the paving will also take about two days.  So, the bumps will not be around very long.

We will be having some short-term road closures next week, but they will only last for a couple of hours at a time.  Most of what we will be doing will keep traffic flowing.  We will be working in the intersections of West A Street and West B Street on West Avenue and try to get those two spots riding better.  West A Street may take some time and may also need to close one side at a time.  We don’t know what we will have under the asphalt until we take it up, but that intersection looks like it has some issues under the pavement.  The schedule is as follows:

  • Monday – Tuesday  – Milling operations on Main Street, Vance Street and Oak Avenue along with the West A Street and West B Street intersections.
  • Wednesday – Thursday  – Paving operations in the same areas.
  • Monday – Friday   – Paving operations being performed by Propst Construction on West A Street, West B Street.

Week of October 11

This week we will be closing First Street to replace a gate valve.  With the depth of the gate valve, we will need multiple days to perform the work.  We will also be working at the intersection of First Street and West Avenue on Tuesday, but with no closure involved with this work.  We will be working in various locations on Thursday and Friday and may interrupt traffic flows in some intersections while we are pumping concrete into the old water systems, but we will not have long term closures on these two days.

The schedule is as follows:

  • Monday-Wednesday – First Street closed between Ridge Avenue and Main Street.  The closure will begin at 8:00am Monday and reopen at 12:00pm on Wednesday.
  • Thursday-Friday  – Work will be performed in various locations on West Ave, Vance St and Oak Ave with minimal disruption.  Some intersections may be closed while the pump truck is pumping concrete, but this will be short term

We are getting close to the end of the project, but we did find a surprise that we need to address.  We will need to add another pipe on West Avenue to supply some of the buildings near the public restrooms.  We will be performing that work Tuesday through Thursday.  We are going to continue to patch the sidewalks and curb and gutter that we had to remove during the project as well as continue to clean up the project.

The schedule is as follows:

  • Monday  – No Closures.  We will be working in the Vance St/West Ave intersection.
  • Tuesday  – West Ave will be closed between First St and West A St for traffic traveling south.
  • Wednesday  – West Ave will be closed between First St and West A St for traffic traveling north.
  • Thursday  – No Closures.  We will be working in the parking spaces on West Ave near the public restrooms
  • Friday  – No Closures.  We will be working in various locations on the project.

Week of September 13

This week will have a few more tie-ins to the new system so there will be a few interruptions of water service as connections are made, but these will be kept at a minimum. Customers will be notified if they will be affected. We will also continue with the abandonment of the old system which will include removing more of the old fire hydrants and general clean up.

There will be no anticipated road closures this week, but flagmen will be used as necessary.

Week of September 6

The end is getting closer for the water project. This week will have not only the utility crew you have seen the past 8 months, but we will also have a concrete contractor that will begin to repair the sidewalks and curbing.  We still have several tie-ins to perform this week and the week after to get everyone on the new system.  After that we will abandon the old systems and clean up.

  • Tuesday – No Closures.  We will have the water turned off on a portion of Oak Ave and we will be working on Oak Ave     at the back entrance to Food Lion.  The water is scheduled to be off between 1:00pm and 5:00pm.
  • Wednesday – No Closures.  We will be working on Oak Ave at the Carolina Interiors building.
  • Thursday – Oak Ave Mall entrance will be closed to perform a tie-in on the water line.  The Vance St entrance will be open.  We will have the water turned off to the buildings around City Hall.  The water is scheduled to be off       between 9:00am and 2:00pm.
  • Friday – No Closures.  We will be working on Vance St near West Ave in front of the church.

We are at the point of inconvenience for everyone.  We have been switching over the water supply for businesses and residents to the new system on a case by case basis for the last couple of weeks, but now we need to start switching larger areas of the project.

We will be making two of these switches on Tuesday the 31st, which means we will be cutting off the water between the hours of 10:00am and 2:00pm.  We are going switch the northern end of West Avenue, which will include some of Main Street, West A Street and the apartments on West Avenue.  The addresses impacted will be 120 – 128 South Main Street, 105 – 149 West Avenue (including the apartments) and 104 – 116 West A Street.

We will also be switching over some businesses this week on West Avenue on a case by case basis that will be a short time frame to be out of water.

We will be working on West Avenue for a majority of the week, but we anticipate only closing roads for two days.

Our schedule for next week is as follows:

  • Monday  – West Ave (northbound side) closed between Vance St and West B St.
  • Tuesday – West A St closed between Main St and West Ave.
  • Wednesday – Friday – No Closures. Work being performed in West Ave and Oak Ave.

August 26

We’re in a more complex part of the project now, and our road closures are subject to change on much shorter notice than in the previous months. Today, we need to make an adjustment to the previously posted schedule and close West Ave southbound side in the morning and the northbound side in the afternoon.

Friday we will be working on West Ave near Vance St, but we are planning to flag traffic around the work zone.

Monday August 23

Due to an unexpected problem this weekend, we will have Vance St closed between Main St and West Ave closed today.  As we excavate, we may need to move into Main St as we try to determine a solution to our problem.  If we move into Main St, we will post updates here as far as impact to traffic flows.
